History and Milestones

Our United Villages (OUV) and The ReBuilding Center (TRC) have grown rapidly, from a small group of volunteers to a highly respected organization with over 30 staff members. A brief history and highlights include:

1996 Portland-based volunteers develop the vision for Our United Villages and host informal community conversations.

1997 OUV is formally founded.

1998 OUV receives official 501(c)(3) non-profit federal tax status from the IRS.

OUV volunteers launch The ReBuilding Center—opening its doors to the public on June 8 in a temporary location at 2325 NW 23rd Avenue.

1999 The ReBuilding Center launches DeConstruction Services.

2000 The ReBuilding Center moves to its permanent location on N. Mississippi Avenue.

2001 The ReBuilding Center initiates ReFind Furniture, a value-added service.

2002 OUV launches its community outreach work in Portland neighborhoods.

2005 The ReBuilding Center celebrates the Grand ReOpening of its warehouse expansion project on June 4.

2006 Our United Villages and The ReBuilding Center receive the Oregon Ethics in Business Award for non-profits.

2007 The ReBuilding Center finishes the final phase of expansion with the remodel of its office and community area.

2008 The Community Trees iron sculpture at the Mississippi Avenue entrance is completed and celebrated.

ReFind Furniture’s new storefront is completed, including a full renovation of the ReFind showroom.

2009 The ReBuilding Center’s 11th birthday party and ReUse Exhibition takes place on June 11.

ReFind Furniture wins the City of Portland BEST Business Award.
