Position Title: Communications Coordinator

Part-Time position: 20 to 32 hours/week

Job Purpose:
Develop and maintain a public communications program that supports, reinforces and reflects the mission, goals and purpose of The ReBuilding Center and its services. Establish and underscore the message of the organization with one common purpose in concert with the community and environment. Promote and further develop community support for all aspects of The ReBuilding Center’s operations through the media, public speaking, industry events, community organizations, and written and online materials. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Assistant Director, the NWSA Outreach & Education Assistant and other Our United Villages staff to coordinate all aspects of OUV’s marketing, outreach, communications and public education efforts to support and enhance The ReBuilding Center’s operations.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
• Develop and implement a written annual plan for achieving communication, marketing and outreach goals.
• Maintain and further develop The ReBuilding Center’s web site to achieve organization-wide goals.
• Respond promptly to all media requests and opportunities. Pursue opportunities for earned media exposure. Maintain comprehensive media contact list. Develop relationships with key PR contacts. Collaborate with staff to prepare press releases for the purpose of promoting organization-wide goals and events.
• Respond to department requests on a timely basis for graphic design needs including signage, brochures, post cards, posters, business cards, flyers, t-shirts, hats, etc. As appropriate, work with external graphic designers on higher profile projects.
• Develop relationships with vendors to meet organizational needs for purchase and printing of marketing-related items.
• Coordinate with staff to maintain consistent supply of all marketing-related materials.
• Develop and maintain a stocked shelf of marketing and promotional materials consisting of brochures, DVD’s, press packets and other related material easily accessible to staff.
• Develop and sustain advertising plan for TRC and its services, including placement in newspapers, coupon books, and other locations. Coordinate creation, placement, and billing of paid advertisements.
• Prepare and distribute TRC monthly email newsletter and other internet messaging with input from all departments.
• Maintain database of email contacts for newsletter and other information-sharing opportunities.
• Develop TRC’s use of internet technology to enhance and expand communication and marketing potential.
• Collaborate with staff to develop presentation material in a variety of formats and to meet a variety of needs.
• Ensure that all outside marketing materials, press releases, and communication materials are reviewed and approved by Assistant Director and/or Executive Director before distribution.
• Ensure that quality photographs of organizational facilities, personnel, resources and activities are regularly taken, organized and accessible. Make photos available to media and staff as appropriate. Organize legal sign-off for permission to photograph.
• Maintain organized filing system of all media exposure received by organization. Maintain regular stock of press packets for outside media and events.
• Create and maintain in-house media bulletin board; post current stories for staff and visitors to view.
• Provide leadership for organizational events, as assigned by Assistant Director.
• Provide leadership and coordination of OUV’s Marketing Committee to develop annual written plans, goals and objectives for communication, outreach and marketing strategies, events and materials.

Actively support NWSA AmeriCorps Outreach & Education Assistant’s efforts to:
• Plan and coordinate strategic community outreach to generate presentation and public speaking opportunities that enhance awareness of Our United Villages, The ReBuilding Center, DeConstruction Services and ReFind Furniture.
• Coordinate and staff information booths at fairs and trade shows. Evaluate and track appropriateness of events for future participation.
• Build appropriate partnerships with local governments, organizations, communities and businesses to achieve organizational development goals and objectives.
• Coordinate requests for tours and presentations with other departments. Gives tours of The ReBuilding Center and presentations when appropriate.

Qualifications:
• Strong working knowledge of marketing and outreach. Minimum 3 years experience in publications, public relations, marketing and/or outreach.
• Excellent public speaking experience.
• Outgoing, personable, self-confident. Strong ability to take initiative.
• Enthusiastic desire to engage public in sharing and promoting the work of the organization.
• Knowledgeable and experienced in the principles of positive community relations.
• Excellent organization skills.
• Advanced computer skills, including InDesign, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and use of digital camera.
• Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills required.
• Ability, proven experience, and love of working with a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Available to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for trade shows, events, fairs and other related functions.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Graphic design experience.
• Live in north/northeast Portland.
• Bi-lingual Spanish/English.
• Sustainability/construction/environment/non-profit experience is a plus.
