Intro to Table Saws (2-day Class)

  • ReBuilding Center 3625 N Mississippi Ave Portland, OR, 97227 United States (map)

See below for COVID-19 shop policy update as of August 17th, 2021

This is a TWO-DAY cohort-style class, and has the same start and end times on BOTH days:

- Monday, October 25th (5:30pm - 8:30pm)
-  Monday, November 1st (5:30pm - 8:30pm)

Often touted as the most versatile tool in the shop or garage, the Table Saw is also one of the most powerful (and potentially risky) machines on the market today.

But, when treated with a healthy dose of respect, these machines become trusty companions, saving us great time and money, and opening up all kinds of potential for efficiency and creativity.

In this two-day, cohort style class, we'll be covering everything from terminology and basic saw anatomy, safe usage and when to not attempt a cut, and we'll practice making some of the more common cuts.

On day two, we'll get more advanced. We'll cover basic cabinet and furniture-maker's joinery and show you how to make your cuts with precision. We'll begin with rabbets and dadoes, talk about "dado stacks" and miter sleds, show you how to make "beveled" cuts for tea boxes, finger-joints and box joints, and we'll finish by talking about DIY "jigs" that you can make to go with you saw.

Topics covered:

  • Basic tablesaw anatomy, maintenance, and safety

  • "Rip cutting" vs. "Cross-cutting"

  • Joinery-related cuts: "box-joints", "finger-joints", "Rabbets" and "Dadoes"

  • Tablesaw accessories for safety and advanced usage: Miter gauges, crosscut sleds, featherboards, tapering-jigs, stop blocks, dado stacks etc.

Cost: $135

Skill level: This class is ideal for Novice/Intermediate students ages 18+. Students ages 16-17 will need a signed youth waiver and must contact education@rebuildingcenter.org to complete registration.

Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours each day and no breaks are planned.
