COVID-19 VACCINATION & MASKING REQUIREMENTS
Starting January 1, 2022, all students participating in in-person classes at the ReBuilding Center Education Shop will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test performed within the prior 72 hours. Check out our FAQs & Safety Guidelines for more details.
In addition, masks are required for all students, staff, and volunteers per guidelines announced by the Oregon Health Authority on August 11. Please note: safety glasses are required in most of our classes and wearing a mask with a wire nosepiece will help reduce fogging.
See below for additional health and safety precautions.
This is a TWO-DAY class and will run from 5:30-8:30pm on BOTH days.
Day 1 – Monday, January 31, 2022
Day 2 – Monday, February 7, 2022
CLASS DESCRIPTION
Cutting boards are useful and can be beautiful works of art, and making one is a great way to learn some basic carpentry skills. In this class you will use reclaimed hardwood to make a simple cutting board of your own design (maximum size 14"x14"). In the process you will learn how to use many tools, including a table saw, chop saw, planer, jointer, and orbital sander. You'll also learn how to do a "glue up" and be introduced to several clamping methods.
This is a project-based class and you'll be able to take your cutting board home after Day 2. You can give it as a gift or use it to enjoy charcuterie for years to come!
Topics covered:
Using table saws and chop saws
How to use a jointer for clean edges
A variety of clamping techniques, including using ropes, clamps, and wedges
Using a thickness planer and sanding to achieve a smooth finish
Sanding techniques
Finishing with food-grade oil
Cost: $100 (total for both days)
ReBuilding Center offers two half-price scholarships for every class:
A BIPOC Scholarship for all BIPOC community members interested in taking a class with us
A Need-based Scholarship for all community members whose income is less than $35,000/year for an individual or $70,000 for a two-earner household
To apply for either scholarship, please choose the appropriate option in the “Event Admission” section on the second page of the registration process.
Skill level: Beginners are welcome, though ideally you have some basic experience on a table saw or have taken a previous class with us. For ages 18+.
Maximum size of class: 10 students
Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours each day with no break planned
