In addition, masks are required for all students, staff, and volunteers per guidelines announced by the Oregon Health Authority on August 11. Please note: safety glasses are required in most of our classes and wearing a mask with a wire nosepiece will help reduce fogging.

This is a TWO-DAY class, and has the same start and end times on BOTH days:

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Have a boring or blighted backyard wall you’d like to embellish? Looking to add color and interest to a garden path? This 2-part workshop offers an introduction to broken-tile mosaics, using materials sourced from the ReBuilding Center's own tile department.

On Day 1, Pam will guide you in creating your own simple mosaic design, which you'll stick onto a 6” - 10” base. Don’t worry if you don’t feel “artistic” — no art or design skills are required to learn this. On Day 2 we will grout our mosaics.

This is a project-based class. You’ll come away from Day 2 with a small finished mosaic for the garden or mantle and skills you can apply to backyard retaining walls and other projects. The possibilities are endless!

Taught by local artist Pam Consear from All Hands Art!

Topics covered: Day 1

  • How to safely break tile with a tack hammer.

  • How and when to use tile nippers

  • Tools and techniques for cutting mirror for use in mosaics

  • Mixing thin-set adhesive to a proper consistency

  • Arranging and spacing your tile bits into a design

  • Sticking tile bits to your base

Topics covered: Day 2

  • Mixing grout to a proper consistency

  • Grouting and finishing your mosaic

  • Ideas for applying mosaic skills to other surfaces and materials

Cost: $95 (total for both days)
ReBuilding Center offers two half-price scholarships for every class:

  • A BIPOC Scholarship for all BIPOC community members interested in taking a class with us

  • A Need-based Scholarship for all community members whose income is less than $35,000/year for an individual or $70,000 for a two-earner household

Skill level: This class is designed for beginners ages 18 and over; no art background is required. If you have prior experience laying tile, you’ll learn new, creative ways of using the same materials.

Maximum size of class: 14 students

Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours on Monday, October 4 and 2 hours on Monday, October 11. No breaks are planned, but you are encouraged to bring a snack and water.
