BIPOC Intro to Carpentry: Picture Frames - $70

  • ReBuilding Center 3625 N Mississippi Ave Portland, OR, 97227 United States (map)

COVID-19 VACCINATION & MASKING REQUIREMENTS

Starting January 1, 2022, all students participating in in-person classes at the ReBuilding Center Education Shop will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test performed within the prior 72 hours. Check out our FAQs & Safety Guidelines for more details.

In addition, masks are required for all students, staff, and volunteers per guidelines announced by the Oregon Health Authority on August 11. We encourage wearing N95 masks when possible and we will have some available for student use in class. Safety glasses are also required for most of our classes, and if you do not have an N95 mask we recommend at least wearing a mask with a wire nosepiece to help reduce fogging.

See below for additional health and safety precautions.

This class is for the BIPOC community only.

What is a BIPOC student? Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) are anyone who identifies as Black, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Alaskan Native, Desi, Asian, Pacific Islander, Chicanx or Latinx.

Can non-BIPOC folks still sign up for BIPOC classes? No, but please check our calendar for other available classes.

Isn't this racist? Good question! No, in fact it's actually an anti-racist practice to create space for BIPOC folks to learn about carpentry and home repair in a space where they are centered. We have many other classes for our white friends and community members to choose from.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This class will give you a great framework for learning some basic carpentry techniques. Learn how to cut angles on chop saws (aka miter saws) and practice using the table saw to make rabbet cuts. Choose a size -- either 8"x10" or 5"x7" -- and use reclaimed lumber to make a pretty picture frame and show off your new carpentry skills!

This is a project-based class. You get to build and take home your own unique frame!

Topics covered:

  • Choosing materials and estimating quantity needed

  • Measuring & marking accurately

  • Chopsaw for cutting angles ("miters")

  • Table Saw for cutting inside (“rabbets")

  • Assembly: gluing and clamping with materials under $5

Cost: $70
ReBuilding Center offers two half-price scholarships for every class:

  • A BIPOC Scholarship for all BIPOC community members interested in taking a class with us

  • A Need-based Scholarship for all community members whose income is less than $35,000/year for an individual or $70,000 for a two-earner household

To apply for either scholarship, please choose the appropriate option in the “Event Admission” section on the second page of the registration process.

Skill level: This class is great for beginners ages 18 and over

Maximum size of class: 8 students

Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours and no breaks are planned.
