Do you have wood flooring, furniture, or other surfaces that need refinishing but you don't know where to start? In this introductory class we will introduce some of the more common issues that surfaces encounter, and how to address preparation, sanding, and a couple of different refinishing options. We will also introduce card scrapers -- they're quiet and create wood shavings instead of sawdust, so they're perfect for folks who don't have a home shop.
This is a discussion class with some limited hands-on activities. You will learn the hows and whys of refinishing, but you will not make a project to take home.
Topics covered:
Identifying types of wood and wood-like material
Minor repairs and how to spot splitting, bowing, or checking -- i.e. when the material is a little too far gone
Preparing wood for refinishing
Sanding efficiently -- when to sand by hand, and when to consider a power tool
Card scrapers (prepare the surface with minimal noise and sawdust!)
Discuss different types of finishes (polyurethane, stains, oils) and when to use them
