Can you wire a switch, frame a wall, or fix your leaky faucet? Do you know your way around a table saw, a chop saw, a planer, a jointer, and an orbital sander? If you do, did you learn how at ReBuilding Center? If not, did you know that you can?!
Repair is empowerment. It is the confidence of learning a new skill, the satisfaction of a job well done. It is tending your home, be it an apartment or a house. It is caring for your belongings so they last.
EVERYONE should be so empowered. Things break. Understanding home electrical and plumbing systems can save a bundle. Being able to repair a busted pipe before catastrophic failure means not having to choose between paying a plumber or your mortgage. And the simple truth is that reuse demands repair. Reclaimed materials are not plug-and-play, which is part of the fun, as long as you have the time, the space, and the know-how.
We aim to provide that space and know-how. Over the next year, we hope to:
EXPAND our class offerings, with more for RENTERS and CREATIVE REUSERS,
Offer full SCHOLARSHIPS to low-income and BIPOC community members,
Open our SHOP to those who do not have the space at home,
Build up a TOOL LIBRARY to share with those who don’t have their own.
Crucial and significant repairs require access to affordable, code-compliant materials. Reuse can only get us so far. To maintain a consistent supply, we will also be working with the construction and development community to secure donations of newer materials that are ready for installation.. Our goal is to keep people in their homes.
This is the second piece of our ReBuilding for Justice Campaign. Over the next few weeks, we will lay out the rest and show you how they all fit together.
YOU and your support are the most important piece of all, because together is how we will build that better tomorrow.
Please consider joining us today by making a gift to our ReBuilding for Justice Campaign.
