Now at ReBuilding Center: From Excess to Access!

ReBuilding Center is excited to announce a new program to help BIPOC homeowners and homeowners with disabilities repair and retain their homes. No one should lose their home because they cannot afford to make repairs, so we’ve partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency and the City of Portland to help make critical home repairs possible for folx!

How does From Excess to Access work?

First, contractors, developers, and construction firms donate leftover materials to ReBuilding Center. We’re seeking lumber, fixtures, appliances, doors, windows, roofing materials, fasteners…basically any and all code-compliant materials that are unused at the conclusion of a job.

Next, the City of Portland’s Empowered Neighborhoods Program identifies BIPOC homeowners and homeowners with disabilities who need to do safe, code-compliant home repairs to avoid fees and liens on their properties, but who cannot afford the permits, materials, and labor needed to get the work done.

The Empowered Neighborhoods Program provides the permit waivers, planning support, and labor.

ReBuilding Center provides the materials we’ve collected from our amazing donors.

And the funding to make it all happen is coming from a Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities grant from EPA Region 10, and a grant from the Pacific Power Foundation. It’s a true partnership effort!

Together, we removing the cost burden of critical repairs and making sure homeowners retain their homes, which are often their largest asset and the key to building generational wealth.

Are there benefits for material donors?

In addition to knowing you’re helping a homeowner repair and retain their home, all donors will receive a tax receipt. Repeat donors will be featured on our website and receive lots of love on our social channels!

Why is ReBuilding Center seeking new materials?

ReBuilding Center has always been a source of amazing reclaimed building materials, and we will always gleefully accept them. From Excess to Access is an additional effort to secure new or nearly-new construction and building materials that meet current code standards and are ready to install. Materials that are not requested for a home repair project with the Empowered Neighborhoods Program will be offered for sale to our community for very affordable prices, helping everyone gain access to safe and affordable home repairs.
