It’s Earth Day weekend! If you’re reading this, you already know that the ReBuilding Center is a valuable community resource. Nowhere else in the region can you find such affordable building materials, such helpful staff, and such empowering home repair classes all in one place.
Portland has a vibrant culture of reuse and reclaim - vintage, consignment, and salvage stores abound, and online platforms like Facebook Marketplace thrive here. But Facebook Marketplace, like many other reuse markets, are focused on profits, rather than creating a sustainable future.
It’s just not the same, y’all.
The ReBuilding Center isn’t just a really cool thrift store, we are completely non-profit, which means our focus is on community and equitable reuse. We don’t make you send 20 messages or meet a stranger in a parking lot, and you have time to think about whether the thing you’re considering spending money on will actually work for you. We answer your questions, we have the best prices, and we even pick up your material donations for free!
We cannot do this without you. Financial donations are critical to our ability to maintain this magic, since only 60% of our revenue comes from sales in the store. Donations help us to keep our prices lower than nearly anywhere else, and support our staff with good pay and full benefits. They help us offer scholarships for our classes, so everyone can learn how to do simple, affordable home repairs. They keep us trucking!
Today we are launching the Scrap Pack, a new monthly donor program that creates a community of our most passionate supporters. Scrap Pack donors receive a fun perk upon joining and a custom ReBuilding Center sticker every year in April, plus special messages and opportunities to come together throughout the year.
Supporting local community reuse is more important than ever. As sustainable programs are defunded and environmental protections are unwound, supporting local efforts to keep materials out of the landfill is vital. Monthly donations keep us in the climate fight.
