SUStainable Crafting: Creative Framing Solutions

This is a TWO-DAY class. Please be sure to note schedule information on both days.

Do you have artwork piling up at home—yours, or pieces you’ve purchased—because you’re avoiding the high cost of professional framing? Together we’ll explore inventive ways to frame and display art using affordable salvaged materials and your ingenuity. Once you open yourself to creative solutions, you may never need to pay for professional framing services again!

Note that we will NOT be learning traditional framing skills like mat-cutting or wood frame joining in this class. Think “creative reuse” rather than “carpentry.”

You are encouraged to bring:

  • 2 or 3 artworks you would like to frame or display

  • Any picture frames, mat boards, hardware, etc. that you already have that might be usable

  • Less standard but related items you already have, which could include colored paper, fabric, wood scraps, etc. that generally match the size/shape of your piece(s).

A range of materials will be provided by the instructor, and hand tools are available for use in the classroom.

On Day 1 we will:

  • Look at examples of artwork that are framed, displayed, or hung in non-traditional ways

  • Give ourselves permission to “think outside of the frame”

  • In small groups, brainstorm ideas for displaying your particular art pieces

  • Browse the ReBuilding Center store for potential materials (each student receives a $10 store coupon with purchase of the class)

  • Work on displaying your artwork

In the week between classes, you may want to gather up a few more materials, based on ideas that emerged on Day 1.

On Day 2 we will:

  • Continue framing/displaying the artworks you have brought, because now we’re on a roll!

Let’s get those meaningful items out of the drawer or box where they’ve been hiding.

Skill level: For ages 18+ as well as 16 and 17 year-olds with parent or guardian permission.

Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours each day with no break planned
